Made to Grow is a modular building system designed for early childhood learning environments that are adaptable, sustainable, and rooted in nature and play.

Built from CNC-cut laminated timber and configured on a hexagonal grid, the architecture grows like a forest: open, flexible, and deeply connected to its surroundings. A repeatable kit of parts, classroom modules, amenity modules, and a family of "tree" structures such as canopies, weather trees, and pavilions, allows complexity to emerge through aggregation rather than bespoke components, supporting phased construction and future expansion.

Each classroom is organised into three tranches, allowing messy play, quiet reading, and focused learning to happen side by side, while large openings connect interiors to the landscape beyond. The hexagonal grid also extends outward into terrain modulation, courtyards, and play typologies, from ponds and sandpits to amphitheatres and picnic areas, creating a continuous flow between indoor, semi-outdoor, and outdoor learning.

The system is designed to grow with a community: a base kit can establish a small school for 20 children, expanding incrementally into a full learning village for 100, complete with canteen, assembly hall, and community centre. A case study for a 100-pupil semi-rural school demonstrates the concept in full, supporting pedagogical approaches such as Montessori, Waldorf, and Reggio Emilia through inhabited thresholds and communal spaces in place of corridors.
