WHO WE ARE
Mattermake is a fully integrated architecture and fabrication studio based in Malta. Our 900 square metre workshop is the heart of our practice. It is where ideas move from sketch to structure through hands-on making. Our team brings together architects, designers, and makers who care about how things are made, who they’re for, and what they can do in the world.
We are driven by care, curiosity, and a strong sense of purpose. Having design and production in the same space allows us to move fluidly between concept and build. We can test ideas early, refine them through materials, and stay close to every part of the process.
​Our outlook is international, but our way of working is grounded and local. We value openness, clear communication, and shared problem solving. We take our work seriously, but not ourselves - that balance helps us stay focused, collaborative, and enjoy the process along the way.
OUR APPROACH
HOW WE WORK
Design should not begin with a catalogue. We believe the most meaningful spaces are shaped from the inside out, starting not with systems but with questions.
What is the space for? Who uses it? What are their habits? How do those habits evolve? We challenge the top down logic of prepackaged components and instead work from the bottom up, listening, adapting, rethinking the grain of daily life and spatial need.​
Our work is a practice of rethinking how we live, how we build, and how design and architecture can actively contribute to culture and wellbeing. Through design thinking, local fabrication, and curiosity led experimentation, we aim to build a more resilient, regenerative, and culturally rich built environment wherever we operate. This authentic, hands-on approach keeps us close to the process, allowing design and making to become one continuous act of authorship.

This is where it starts. With intention, not reaction. By leading with design, we set the pace and direction of our work. We decide what matters and where to focus. It gives us authorship and clarity. Whether we are building a modular system, developing a tool, or shaping a public space, design helps us stay aligned with what we believe in.
WE MAKE WHAT WE DESIGN.
This is where ideas become real. By being hands-on, we are not dependent on external systems to execute our ideas. We can prototype, adapt, and build iteratively with speed. This gives us agency and the ability to take ownership by bringing complex or unconventional ideas into the world without waiting for permission. Our workshop is a tool to democratise good design and empower changemakers.
